Trump’s hike in tariffs on China impacts billions of dollars’ worth of auto parts and Ford and GM automobiles.

The Lincoln Nautilus from Ford and the Buick Envision from General Motors, which made up 95% of all Chinese-manufactured automobiles sold in the United States last year, will be most affected.

President Trump’s 10% tariffs on China imports may affect a few American automobiles, but they may also affect auto parts, potentially increasing consumer prices for already high-priced vehicles.

The U.S. International Trade Commission estimates that the United States has imported between $15.4 billion and over $17.5 billion worth of transportation goods from China in recent years, including $9 billion to $10 billion in auto parts and accessories for cars and tractors, among other special purpose vehicles.

The impact of the Chinese auto market on the US is most pronounced with the Lincoln Nautilus from Ford and the Buick Envision from General Motors. Of the 88,515 Chinese-made cars sold in the US last year, 95% were crossovers. GM and Ford are the most affected companies, while other automakers like Volvo, owned by China’s Geely and its electric vehicle spin-off Polestar, import fewer automobiles into the US. To cut down on the quantity of cars imported from China, they have also modified their production schedules. This is particularly true for EVs, as the Biden administration imposed a 100% tariff on Chinese models of these vehicles last year.

Regarding possible adjustments to production or pricing for their cars built in China, Ford and GM spokespeople declined to comment.Polestar and Volvo have not commented on GlobalData’s report that only 0.6% of the 16 million new cars sold in the US last year were produced for Chinese buyers, despite imports from Slovakia, Sweden, and the UK being comparable. Tariffs on Canada or Mexico could significantly impact the American automobile market, which accounted for 23.4% of US sales last year. Goldman Sachs analyst Mark Delaney stated that China is a key part of the battery/storage supply chain, but vehicle imports are minimal.

However, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a significant number of components used in an electric vehicle in the United States come from China. These consist of the following: Nissan Ariya EV (40%); Toyota bZ4x EV (20%) and RAV4 PHEV (20%); Hyundai Kona EV (50%) and Hyundai Ioniq 5 N (30%); Kia EV9 (35%) and Niro Electric (25%); and Volkswagen ID Buzz EV (25%).
