Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards expressed dissatisfaction with the tournament-style setup, while Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green criticized the new competition as “ain’t basketball.”
The league has made a lot of changes to the All-Star Game over the last few years in an effort to make it more exciting. Sunday’s event was the latest attempt to breathe new life into the game. The NBA seems to be at a loss for ideas on how to make the game more exciting. To no avail, they have tried letting player captains choose their own teams and not timing the fourth quarter in favor of a goal score.

It’s easy to see why the NBA is always making changes to the game. Players, fans, and the media have all said that it has lost most, if not all, of its competitive edge in recent years. However, the long breaks on Sunday were their own fault; many players said afterwards that it was hard to stay loose for the basketball because of all the breaks. At one point, Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving started running line drills by himself to warm up during the TNT tribute.

A team that didn’t play was also bad for the league.

Edwards was one of two late scratches for the Los Angeles Lakers. The other was forward LeBron James. James did not get to the All-Star events until Sunday. At a news conference before the game, he said he would not play because his ankle hurt.

Also, Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was also hurt and couldn’t play, spoke out against the new format before the games even started. He said that a game with American All-Stars playing against the rest of the world would be “more exciting.”

The NBA should listen to the people who were there on Sunday. It looks like most people would agree on an East vs. West or USA vs. the World game with fewer breaks and more focus on basketball.

A good thing for the league? At least one well-known player thought there was a little more energy when the players got to play.
