Trump says that Hamas leaders and people in Gaza will die if the prisoners aren’t freed right away.
Trump made the statement on Truth Social while his government is in talks with Hamas to free hostages in the Gaza Strip.
President Donald Trump has urged Hamas members and Palestinians in Gaza to free their prisoners immediately, stating that they would be killed if they were not released. Trump met with eight prisoners freed from Gaza, and the White House is in direct talks with Hamas about freeing U.S. prisoners still held in the Gaza Strip. He urged the leaders to leave Gaza while they can and warned the people of Gaza about the consequences of keeping hostages.
At a news briefing at the White House, Leavitt said that Trump sees the talks as a “good-faith effort to do what’s right for the American people.”
“American lives are at risk,” she said, adding that Israel had been contacted.
Israel and Hamas’ six-week ceasefire finished on Saturday, and there are no signs that peace talks will continue. The US has called the group a terrorist organization, but this is the first time it has had direct talks with it.

When asked if Trump’s plan to take over Gaza was part of the talks, Leavitt said she wouldn’t go into specifics and sent the questions to the State Department.
At first, the plan for a second part of a ceasefire was for Hamas to free more hostages in exchange for Israel leaving the Palestinian territory. The goal was to end the war.
But since there were no more talks, Israel stopped sending humanitarian aid to Gaza again after the first part of the ceasefire ended. Then Hamas said that Israel had broken the deal by “avoiding the commitment to end the war and withdraw completely from Gaza.”
Israel recently agreed to a plan from Steve Witkoff, the U.S. special envoy to the Middle East, that would have kept the first stage of the ceasefire in place during Ramadan and Passover instead of moving on to the second part of peace talks.
Witkoff’s plan called for freeing half of the remaining hostages on the first day, along with the bodies of those who had died. The other half would be freed once a lasting ceasefire agreement was made, according to the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
But Hamas turned down the idea, saying it didn’t follow through with the original multiphase ceasefire deal.
“Unfortunately, these positions by the United States strengthened the position of the Zionist right within the government and pushed for taking punitive steps, including closing the crossings in this manner and using the starvation policy against the people of the Gaza Strip,” Hazem Qassem, the group’s spokesman, said in a statement on Sunday.
A spokesperson for the White House National Security Council on Sunday, Brian Hughes, said that Israel has “negotiated in good faith since the beginning of this administration to ensure the release of hostages held captive by Hamas terrorists.”
Hughes also said that the US will back Israel’s choice of what to do next “since Hamas has made it clear that it is no longer interested in a negotiated ceasefire.”
