After his fight with Zelenskyy in the Oval Office, Trump stops sending military help to Ukraine.
Trump is criticizing President Zelenskyy and the US’s military aid to Ukraine, stating that peace is the president’s goal. The US is taking a break and examining aid to ensure it is helping find a solution, while the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington has not responded.
In a tense meeting in the Oval Office on Friday, Trump and Vice President JD Vance told Zelenskyy that he hadn’t shown enough gratitude for the billions of dollars in U.S. help given to his country in the three years since Russia invaded. This is what the Trump administration did.
After the meeting, Trump said on Truth Social that Zelenskyy had “disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office.” He also told reporters that Zelenskyy had “overplayed his hand” and wanted to keep fighting instead of trying to make peace.
In January, the State Department said that since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, the US had given the country $65.9 billion in military help.
Russia takes over about 20% of Ukraine.
Trump blamed Ukraine for Russia’s invasion and suggested a deal could end the war. Zelenskyy, who accused Trump of Russian fake news, said he is ready to sign a deal for US access to Ukraine’s rare-earth minerals, suggesting a possible fix to Ukraine’s relationship.
When asked Monday about Trump’s choice to stop sending military aid to Ukraine, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told reporters, “That’s his decision.” Johnson was referring to Trump.
The move was slammed by Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.
Collins said, “This is a very important time for Ukraine. I was in charge of the Ukraine supplemental last year, which gave Ukraine extra help, and I don’t think we should be stopping our work.”
Senate Republicans had said they hoped for a deal to still be possible so that the U.S. could keep helping Ukraine and make it easier to reach a peace deal with Russia before the plans for the pause were made public.
“I just hope that they can get things back on track and that everyone will put in even more effort,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., told reporters after the heated meeting in the Oval Office. He called it a “missed opportunity.”
After Zelenskyy’s trip to Washington, some European leaders showed even more support for Ukraine.
On Sunday, Keir Starmer, the prime minister of Britain, revealed that the country would lend Ukraine $2.8 billion and said that Britain, France, and Ukraine had agreed to work together to plan a ceasefire that would be sent to the United States.
European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron expressed support for Ukrainians, stating they will continue working towards a fair and lasting peace for their dignity, independence, and European security.
